Patricia C. Pope, MS, BA

As CEO, Co-Founder, and Chief Creative Officer of Pope & Associates, Pat is a recognized subject matter expert with over four decades of knowledge and experience in diversity, inclusion, and culture change. She serves as the lead consultant on many of our client engagements and has primary responsibility for Research & Development. Her passion is creating new assessments/measurement tools, new learning content and training solutions, and innovative ways to build inclusive cultures.

She coined the phrase “The Illusion of Inclusion” in 1990 and has continued to research this phenomenon. Her innovative measurement tool, Team Interaction Profile, used by hundreds of teams is recognized for it’s simplicity and deep insights. She published Relationship Mapping: A Tool for Diagnosing Relationships, and has also written many articles and blogs over the years.

She is co-founder and co-owner of Myca-Pope, Inc., a company that offers technology-based delivery methods for Pope’s proprietary content. Clients continue to say that it is the best content and most engaging e-learning tool on any topic.

Pat was recognized as a Pioneer by Profiles in Diversity Journal in 2007 and as a Diversity Legend by the International Society of Diversity & Inclusion Professionals in 2012. Other awards include: The Cincinnati Business Courier, Enterprising Women, Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce Small Business Award, and Top 100 Women-Owned Businesses in Ohio.

She has served as an advisor on the SHRM Task Force to develop national standards for Diversity & Inclusion, serving as co-chair on the Metrics Committee for over 2 years. She also served on the U.S. Army Diversity & Inclusion Roundtable, the Diversity Advisory Board for Kent State University, the Executive Advisory Board for the Williams College of Business, Xavier University, the External Advisory Board for the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan, and as a Board Member for Enterprising Women.

Pat’s BA degree is in Business and the Social Sciences, and she has a Master’s Degree in Organizational Development from Pepperdine University.

Merlin G. Pope, Jr., Ph.D. ABD, MS, BS (1942-1998)

As co-founder of Pope & Associates, Merlin is remembered as one of the first pioneers in the diversity movement. He coined the term “diversity” in 1977 to refer to the changing demographics of the U.S. workforce.

As a Yale-educated sociologist, he was recognized for his insight and breakthrough solutions. When organizations began to focus on Affirmative Action in the early 1970s, he began talking about the importance of inclusion; when they viewed Affirmative Action as “the right thing to do,” he helped them understand that it was the “smart thing to do” by demonstrating the link between increasing diversity and productivity.

Merlin’s pioneering work has been recognized in many ways prior to and after his death, including:

  • Kent State University “President’s Social Responsibility Award” (1995)
  • Merlin G. Pope, Jr. $100,000 Founders Medallion Scholarship at Kent State University for an African-American student majoring in Sociology (1997)
  • Dedication of “Executive Forum with Edwin Neuman” interview segment on diversity in the workplace to “The Memory of Merlin G. Pope, Jr.” (1998)
  • Induction into the “Hall of Fame” of his Middletown, Ohio High School, along with other notable graduates: basketball legend, Jerry Lucas, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Clarence Page, singer Dorothy McGuire, and former State Senator Barry Level. (1998)

Annual Awards

Two specific annual awards were been created in his name:

Merlin G. Pope, Jr., Army Equal Opportunity Advisor NCO of the Year Award
This award, created in 2002, recognizes a Non-Commissioned Officer who has displayed outstanding leadership qualities which directly impact the readiness of the Army Reserves.

Merlin G. Pope, Jr. Diversity Leadership Award
This award, created in 2003 with the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, recognizes an individual executive who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to diversity and inclusion within their organization and/or the community. Previous recipients have included John Pepper, former CEO of Procter & Gamble, Kathryn Merchant, President/CEO of Greater Cincinnati Foundation, William T. Sprankles, III, Principal of Princeton High School, Phillip Holloman, President and COO of Cintas, Clarence Pauley, VP of HR for UC Health, and David Singleton, Executive Director of the Ohio Justice & Policy Center.
